This weeks theme about design research was very interesting for me. The lecture with Haibo Li helped me understanding the text "Turn Your Mobile Into the Ball: Rendering Live Football Game Using Vibration." better and Haibo made it very clear how important every single step of the design creation process is. He started with explaining the importance of a good structure within the research question and the definition of the problem. The example where a teacher and a student need to run away from a bear made it very clear that one should not focus to much on one perspective. In the example the first thought that they both need to fight the bear, because they could not run faster than the bear. But then the student came up with the idea that only he needs to run faster than the teacher to beat the bear. The bear would be satisfied with catching only one of the two. If we take this example and adapt it to research it shows how we should not get stuck in the first thoughts that come to our mind about a problem. The other example Haibo gave us was the film Johnny English where we saw how a problem can be solved in a difficult, but also in a very easy way.
The second lecture about design research was a little bit confusing and did not really made me understand design research better. We spent a lot of time to summarize what design research is, but it felt more like a repetition from the first lecture. I did not really feel that I learned that much in this weeks theme, but I definitely became more interested in the topic after reading the texts and listening to the lectures.

I think that you have really summarized the main aspect of this theme in a clear and concise way. I also liked the example of the teacher, student and bear as it helped me understand what Haibo was saying in a way that was easy to remember. As you said the second lecture was more a repetition of the first but I thought that there were a few discussions that were interesting. For example that choosing a method does not in itself mean that research is being conducted. It is the analysis that turns something into research. What do you think?
AntwortenLöschenI agree with you that the lecture with Haibo Li was really interesting and well structured. I also enjoyed the case of the hungry bear. It's a good reminder for the different steps of the design research. As far as I understood the second lecture a prototype is mostly to gain knowledge but I have to agree with you that it was more a repetition. What are your thoughts on this? Good Job!
AntwortenLöschenI agree that the bear fable conveys and important idea. It’s easy to become too focused on solving the problem in mind, when in reality you sometimes have to step back and reflect on what you’re really trying to achieve. And then it might turn out that the issue you have to solve is a completely different one. I also agree that the second lecture was a bit incoherent, although I thing there were some good points here and there to take away.
AntwortenLöschenHi! Thank you for your reflection! I agree with you that the second lecture was a bit confused, but I think that points of the first lecture help to understand the role of prototype is design research better. I think the same steps as defining the problem, filtering the idea, evaluation the idea, etc. should be done in design research as well. And testing prototype is a way of evaluation of suggested solution in the research.
AntwortenLöschenIt's nice that you brought up the bear story, it's was a great example used to make a point during the lecture showing how different perspective can help you really understand what the actual problem is and then find a solution. As you, I felt that the second lecture was very unrehearsed and unorganized. It made it really hard to grasp the point for me as well. Something I found was new with that lecture was that prototype doesn't have to have the purpose to solve anything but could also be to only help gain knowledge as well. Was it something in particular you did not understand? Would have been good if you further developed your thoughts on that as well.
AntwortenLöschenHi Hannah! Like you I found parts of this theme's lectures a bit unclear. What I mostly took with me from Anders' lecture was that there is a difference between prototyping for industry and prototyping for design research. Previous to the lecture I had only thought about prototyping from an industrial point of view so that I what I learnt from that lecture. But I agree with you that it was not the most structured lecture I have ever been to :P
AntwortenLöschenHi~
AntwortenLöschenThank you for sharing your reflection. I agree with your feeling about the two lectures. I think the lecture by Haibo Li mainly focus on the process included defining and solving problems, while the second lecture by Anders talked the prototype and its differences between industrial and design research. Nice job!
Hi,
AntwortenLöschenYou really made a good portray for the instance of how to escape from a bear. What impressed me most in the first lecture is the tunnel vision because it is beyond my old knowledge.I've never thought that if we drive faster, our vision will be narrowed down.In this way we could lead us into dangerous situation because the danger is beside. It reminds me never neglect even the smallest mistake in our life.I would be vital.I also confused that both of these two lecture did not gave us a general vision of design research. Maybe defining problem and learning the conception of prototype is also parts of design research.
