In my bachelor studies I have had lots of courses where we dealt with research methods and I had to write several papers (including two bachelor thesis), where I used qualitative and quantitative research methods. Therefore I felt like I already knew a lot about the topic from theme 4. My chosen paper was published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication (volume 20) and is called "Professional Personae - How Organizational Identification Shapes Online Identity in the Workplace", written by Christian Fieseler, Miriam Meckel and Giulina Ranzini. It was easy for me to identify the method used in the paper and to discuss the methodological problems of it.
In the seminar we started to summarize the methods in our chosen papers and discussed benefits and limitations of the different methods. During the discussion we changed our topic to our bachelor thesis, which topic we worked on, which methods we used and if we had to do any other empirical research in our bachelor studies. It was very interesting to talk about how the different bachelor programs used empirical research and how practical or theoretical the topics of my colleagues were.
At the end of the seminar we discussed that in many cases the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods is necessary and tried to find examples for that. We also talked about that qualitative methods do not always need to be done before using quantitative methods when dealing with one topic. The other way round is also possible and it always depends on the question asked. Although I already knew a lot about research methods before it was very interesting to talk about how my colleagues used them more or less in their bachelor studies and to get to know their topics of their bachelor thesis.
Hi! I enjoyed reading your reflection. In our seminars we also discuss our previous thesis works as well. The research paper that you've selected illustrated questionnaire method very well and showed how results can be generalized. I agree that the main benefit of internet-based survey is ability to reach big audience and get accurate statistical data.
AntwortenLöschenI quite agree that the concept of this theme was nothing new to most of us, considering you have even done not one, but two bachelor thesis. So my comment is not going to add anything to your reflection. I am glad that you already feel quite comfortable with the concepts of research methods and their differences and usage. Good job!
AntwortenLöschenA good and compact reflection. It seems like you have a lot more experience with research papers than many of us. Then this introduction to quantitative methods was probably superflous. Although it seems to have been interesting to discuss different theses. It's great to have come far enough in the education that this is a possibility.
AntwortenLöschenHi Hannah! Thank you for a really good blog post, I especially liked the part of the blog post were you wrote about how you during the seminar changed topic and started to talk about your previous bachelor thesis, I had really enjoyed that discussion. I have notised that there are several students in the course that has experiences of quantitative research, and so for both me and you as well. But I think that it is good with rehearsal and especially now in the beginning of our master education. Good job this week, keep it up!
AntwortenLöschenHi!
AntwortenLöschenFun reading your reflection! I couldn't agree more with you on that having written my thesis made this theme pretty easy and also less educational. I believe the majority felt this way from what I've read on others blogposts about this week. In the end you mentioned that you tried coming up with examples where both quantitative and qualitative methods are used. Did you manage to find any examples or did you feel it was hard?
If you felt you didn't come up with a example on that and you are interested in my post blog I've mentioned an example of that.
Keep it up!
Hello!
AntwortenLöschenI found your reflection interesting, especially that you discussed what you had done in your bachelor studies during the seminar.
I was also familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods before this week, but I feel that there is alway something new to learn and our knowledge of the different research methods can alwlays be improved.
Hi,
AntwortenLöschenThanks for sharing your chosen paper. It seems you already handled this theme. It is interesting that "We also talked about that qualitative methods do not always need to be done before using quantitative methods when dealing with one topic."Maybe qualitative method is used to explain
and find the origin of some phenomena and give us a better understanding of the research. It always used before the quantitative method but apparently,it can also be used after the quantitative method. They compliment each other and make a better research.
Thanks for your short but interesting reflection.
